1. Nominal Clause (Noun Clause)
A nominal clause performs any syntactic function typically filled by a noun phrase (Subject, Object, Complement, Appositive). They usually begin with that, if/whether, or wh- words.
- As Subject: [What you said during the meeting] surprised everyone.
- As Direct Object: I strongly believe [that education empowers people].
- As Subject Complement: The absolute truth is [that we need more research].
- As Prepositional Complement: Pay attention to [what the speaker is demonstrating].
2. Adjectival Clause (Relative Clause)
An adjectival clause functions like an adjective to post-modify a preceding noun or pronoun (the antecedent). They are introduced by relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that) or relative adverbs (where, when, why).
- Defining (Restrictive) Relative Clause: Provides essential information necessary to identify the noun. No commas are used.
- Example: The scholar [who wrote this linguistics book] won an international award.
- Non-Defining (Non-Restrictive) Relative Clause: Adds extra, parenthetical information about an already identified noun. Separated by commas.
- Example: Professor Smith, [who joined our university last year], has published a new study.
3. Adverbial Clause
An adverbial clause functions like an adverb, modifying verbs, adjectives, or main clauses. It specifies circumstances such as time, place, cause, condition, purpose, concession, manner, or result. Introduced by subordinating conjunctions:
- Adverbial Clause of Time: We will leave [as soon as the presentation finishes].
- Adverbial Clause of Cause/Reason: She succeeded [because she prepared meticulously].
- Adverbial Clause of Condition: [If you study systematically], you will pass with high honors.
- Adverbial Clause of Concession/Contrast: [Although it was raining heavily], they continued the survey.
- Adverbial Clause of Place: Store the chemical [where children cannot reach it].

1. Simple Sentence
Consists of a single independent (main) clause containing one finite verb structure, expressing a complete thought. It contains no subordinate clauses.

2. Compound Sentence
Consists of two or more independent main clauses of equal grammatical rank, joined together by coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So), conjunctive adverbs (however, therefore), or semicolons.
